In the UK, it’s estimated that two-thirds of children will experience at least one case of head lice before leaving primary school.
While lice don’t transmit diseases, they can cause discomfort and are easily spread. Implementing effective prevention strategies is essential to control their transmission.
1. Wash Clothes and Bedding
Lice can survive off the scalp for up to 48 hours.
To eliminate them, wash all bedding, stuffed animals, towels, hats, and clothing used in the last two days in hot, soapy water (at least 130°F or 54°C) and tumble dry on high heat. For items that can’t be washed, seal them in an airtight bag for 48 hours to ensure any lice present will die.
2. Disinfect Personal Items
Combs, brushes, and hair accessories can harbor lice. Soak these items in hot water (at least 130°F or 54°C) for 5–10 minutes. Additionally, vacuum car seats, helmets, and other areas where your child may have rested their head to remove any stray lice or hairs with attached nits.
3. Check All Family Members for Lice
Regularly inspect everyone in the household, as lice can quickly move from person to person. Early detection can prevent a minor issue from becoming a full-blown infestation. Use a fine-toothed comb on wet hair to check for live lice and nits.

4. Inform Your Child’s School or Nursery
Notifying your child’s school, nursery, or daycare allows other parents to check their children and prevent further spread. Since head lice are highly contagious, early communication helps contain outbreaks.
5. Teach Kids Not to Share Head Items
Encourage your child to avoid sharing combs, brushes, hats, headbands, and headphones. While lice mainly spread through head-to-head contact, shared items can also contribute to transmission.
