Does Tea Tree Oil Kill Head Lice?

Tea tree oil has gained a reputation as a natural remedy for all sorts of ailments, from acne to dandruff, but can it really kill head lice? Many people swear by its effectiveness, claiming that this essential oil can repel and eliminate these pesky parasites.

However, head lice are resilient creatures, and not every home remedy lives up to the hype. In this blog, we’ll explore whether tea tree oil is truly a lice killer, how it’s believed to work, and whether it’s a safe and reliable solution for tackling infestations. Let’s separate fact from fiction and find out if tea tree oil should be in your anti-lice arsenal.

Tea tree oil is in a lot of head lice products – so it works right?

Tea tree oil has been marketed for a long time as something that head lice dislike and is therefore effective in the fight against them. The truth is there is no evidence that actually supports this. There have been no scientific studies that have shown this to be the fact, and scientific evidence is important to support such a claim.

It is important for you if you have used a tea tree-based head lice product also to examine your own empirical evidence – has it been effective in defeating head lice for you? If you have been nit combing as you are encouraged to do alongside using the products it is often the combing that is the most effective thing you are doing.

What does the NHS think of tea tree oil for head lice?

Every so often the government publishes what is known as the Stafford Report, which looks at the overall approach to tackling head lice and what the NHS should recommend to parents. The report does not rate tea tree oil as an effective ingredient to deal with head lice.

What does tea tree oil do effectively?

Tea tree is a natural disinfectant. Head lice carry a lot of bacteria, so it helps with the bacteria, but it won’t kill the head lice or their eggs for you.

Tea tree oil needs to be treated with care

Tea tree oil must not be used in its neat form. It must be diluted in a carrier oil. If used in a neat form, it can burn the skin.
