Eyelash Nits: What are they and how to get rid of them?

Most of us are aware of head lice and nit removal however, eyelash nits are less commonly discussed. This article will explain what they are, what can cause them and how to get rid of them.

What are eyelash nits?

Eyelash mites rather than nits are specifically found on the eyelashes and nowhere else.

They are naturally occurring, microscopic and we all have them. They perform a natural cleaning role, eating dead skin and naturally producing oils.

If they are naturally occurring why get rid of them?

Eyelash nits become a problem when you have too many of them. That’s when they become visible in bunches at the base of your lashes by the eyelids, and that is when they also irritate the eye and cause infection.

There has been an increase in the rising popularity of false eyelashes

It is not the false eyelashes that are causing this rise in lice mites, but rather the hygiene of the beauticians applying the false eyelashes. If there is poor hygiene, then there is a transfer of eyelash mites between people. It is this transfer of other people’s eyelash mites onto someone else that creates an unhealthy situation.

Are eyelash nits the same as head lice?

They aren’t. They aren’t even related! If you have head lice, they don’t want to live in your eyelashes either. They want to be protected in the mass of hair on your head. It is too exposing on the eyelashes!

How do you deal with an eyelash mite situation that is out of control?

You need to see a doctor who will identify the issue, and they will prescribe a suitable ointment to treat it.
