What could itchy bumps on the scalp mean?

If you find itchy bumps on your scalp, then you need to understand why they are occurring. There can be several reasons, and it is important to eliminate these to treat them correctly. Read on to find out about what could be the cause of your itchy scalp.

Itchy bumps on the scalp could be caused by headlice

When head lice feed, they inject their saliva which contains an anti-coagulant, so the blood flows easily for them. If you are allergic to their saliva, you can get raised hives and itching. If you have these they are generally around the base of the neck under the hairline, but you can sometimes get them further in on the scalp itself and behind the ears.

If you find these then you should check for head lice. To check, divide the hair into sections, apply some conditioner and nit comb section by section.  If there are head lice in there that should track them down.

Itchy bumps on the scalp could be caused by folliculitis

Folliculitis are inflamed hair follicles that appear as red itchy bumps. This inflammation can be caused by bacteria infecting the follicle. This can be caused by rubbing or touching the scalp a lot or frequent shaving.  It can be cleared up quite easily by changing habits and using mildly medicated shampoo, frequently washing the hair.

Itchy bumps on the scalp could be caused by scalp acne

Scalp acne is a thing and needs to be treated like any acne. The hair follicles can get blocked or clogged like any pore, so you need to keep the scalp cleansed and possibly use a medicated shampoo to deal with the bacteria.

If it persists you should see the doctor for possible referral to a dermatologist. Your local pharmacist can also be a good source of advice and product recommendations.

Itchy bumps on the scalp could be caused by ringworm

Ringworm has a distinct raised larger round shape caused by the worm developing.  These are serious and highly infectious.  You need to go to the doctor to get these treated.

Itchy bumps on the scalp could be caused by eczema

Also known as dermatitis, eczema is itchy and can have a rash-like appearance.  The scalp becomes inflamed and is accompanied by dry skin, creating dandruff. It can be caused by stress, but also hormone changes, and dramatically changing temperatures.

Additionally, certain medications can trigger it or using irritant, chemical products.  There are certain home remedies using apple cider vinegar, otherwise, your pharmacist or doctor can prescribe a topical cream to treat it.

There can be more serious issues that present as itchy bumps on the scalp, so if in doubt then do go to your doctor or pharmacist and have it inspected and treated.  Your doctor may recommend that you see a dermatologist if that is necessary.
