For years, physical insecticides like dimethicone have been marketed as ‘resistance-proof’ due to their mechanical mode of action – coating the louse and smothering it. However, emerging evidence now challenges this long-held belief, suggesting that dimethicone may no longer be the fail-safe option it once was.
So, what does this mean for families dealing with stubborn infestations? Let’s explore what the latest research reveals – and what steps you can take to clear head lice effectively.

Recent Clinical Research Confirms Resistance Is Emerging
In 2023, Ian Burgess, the country’s leading entomologist, published research indicating that resistance is indeed taking hold.
He stated:
“New evidence suggests that some treatment failures were because the product did not work as expected… As with resistance to insecticides in the early 1990s, this is likely only the tip of a more extensive problem within the wider community.”
Burgess observed that affected individuals continued to show a full range of louse development stages week after week. This strongly indicated that treatments were failing to kill adult lice or older nymphs capable of becoming adults. Crucially, these individuals had no infested family members, and no lice contacts could be identified during follow-ups.
Treatment failures spanned three different products – including one not previously used in the UK.
Why Is Resistance to Dimethicone Products Happening?
According to Ian Burgess, lice may have evolved in two key ways:
- Changes to their waterproofing lipid layer, making it harder for dimethicone to smother them effectively.
- Structural changes to the spiracle (breathing apparatus), preventing products from entering the respiratory system to block water excretion.
In simple terms, lice are evolving their defences – making them harder to suffocate.
What Do Scientists Recommend Now That Dimethicone Resistance Is Growing?
Neither the NHS nor NICE currently recommend any specific head lice product – and Ian Burgess supports this position. He stresses the urgent need for new treatments, warning that resistance will only become more widespread until existing products stop working altogether.
Consumer Experiences With Dimethicone Products
It’s worth reflecting on your own experiences with these treatments. Have they worked? Or did you spot lice again shortly after use? If so, you’re not alone – and it’s important to trust your own observations.
No longer assume these products will deliver the results they promise, and don’t rely on them as your only solution.
