Even when a product does kill lice on contact, a single application usually can’t catch everything, for two simple reasons: lice eggs are invisible when they are laid so they need to come through, plus they hatch on a staggered timeline, not all at once.

A treatment applied today can only affect lice and eggs that are already at a vulnerable stage — anything about to hatch a few days later is unaffected. This is exactly why the NHS recommends repeating wet combing over multiple sessions across a two-week period.

Some medicated treatments need to be reapplied after a week to catch newly hatched lice the first round missed. If you skip that second round or comb inconsistently, the infestation will have a chance to re-establish itself.
